Announcing the birth of Henry Edward Bartholomew

Henry Edward Bartholomew

I am very pleased to announce the birth of my beautiful baby boy, Henry on Saturday 4th October 2008. He was born exactly 1 week early weighing a healthy 7lbs 14oz.

The birth went very well indeed and was actually an enjoyable experience! He was born at home in a blow up birth pool with my husband, Stephen and two midwives (all to ourselves!) present. The only pain relief required was the magical TENS machine and the warm water in the pool, although not at the same time! I also did quite a bit of dancing, taking the opportunity to practice choreographies from the new Johara show between contractions. The Bartholomew Family I am convinced that the dancing - in particular performing hip circles during the contractions - is what turned him from a back to back position in the early stages of the labour into a perfect position ready for his birth.

For a movie clip of me dancing during established labour visit http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-nEdqIopqRY. Don't worry, this is a no mess movie!!

I would like to say a big thank you to all of you who have sent your congratulations and best wishes on to us. It is lovely to know there are so many of you wishing us well and celebrating Henry's birth. I hope you will all get to meet him very soon.

Christmas Parties

As usual, the last class of term will be a mini Christmas party, this year it is also an opportunity to meet the new Sevenveils mascot, Henry!!

The parties will start with a video session so that you can see the wide variety of bellydance styles performed. After this there will be a short warm up followed by informal performances of class dances and any solos you might have been working on. Finally drinks & nibbles, Arabic party music and a chance to chat with your fellow students and coo over the baby!

Drop in parties will be held at Sittingbourne on 9th December from 7:30pm to 9:30pm and Aylesford on 11th December, 7pm to 9:30pm. Party nights will cost just £4. As they are drop in classes, anyone is welcome to join us for the party, whether you are a regular at the class or not! I hope to see you there!

The Show

The Johara Dance Company will be bringing their new show "ELEMENTAL" to the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone on Saturday 28th February 2009 at 7:30pm. This marks the first stop in their tour which will travel the South of England during Spring 2009. There will be just one performance of the show in Kent and a limited number of tickets available, so I recommend booking early!

Tickets cost £14 or £12 for concessions and are available for the show via the Hazlitt Arts Centre Website (http://www.hazlittartscentre.co.uk) or through the box office (telephone 01622 758 611).

Johara Dance is a vibrant company whose shows blend Arabic Belly Dance with a rich mix of African Dance, Flamenco, Tango, Bollywood, Gypsy, Burlesque and more.

The Workshops

Sevenveils are hosting The Johara Dance Company for a day of workshops on Sunday 1st March 2009 at the Aylesford Community Centre. Workshops include introductions to some of the exciting styles from the show including Bollywood, Burlesque, Gypsy dance, dancing to drum solos and fan dancing, all taught by JWAAD teachers from the Johara Dance Company.

For more information and booking see further details below or visit www.sevenveils.co.uk/dancing/aylesford.php

New Class in Gravesend

Due to the great number of requests that we receive for bellydance lessons in Gravesend, Ann Hall has started a new class at the Cascades Leisure Centre, Thong Lane. From January there will be two classes on Tuesday evenings; beginners 7pm to 8pm and improvers from 8pm to 9pm. Classes cost £4 plus £1.50 entrance to the leisure centre for non-members. For more information please contact Ann (ann.hall@twang.co.uk).

Changes to the Sittingbourne Classes

From January the two Sittingbourne classes will be merged to make one mixed ability class. The new class will be 7:30pm to 9pm and cost £6. The class will work in the same way as the Aylesford class, by streaming students so that beginners can have the practice time they need for basic moves while improver level students will still be stretched with layering of technique.

Gift Vouchers: Ideal Christmas Presents!

Gift vouchers are available from Sevenveils for the Tuesday class in Sittingbourne, the Thursday class in Aylesford and for the workshops with Johara Dance on 1st March 2009.

The vouchers make an ideal present for Christmas as they come with an attractive gift card. The workshop vouchers can be used for any of the five workshops available on 1st March 2009 in Aylesford, just tell the lucky lady to let us know which one they would like to attend before 1st February. It's the perfect gift for the bellydancer in your family!

Johara Dance is a vibrant company whose shows blend Arabic Belly Dance with a rich mix of African Dance, Flamenco, Tango, Bollywood, Gypsy, Burlesque and more. You may already be familiar with Johara Dance through their performances at the International Bellydance Congress in 2007 where they performed a comedy "chav" stick dance, an elegant Oriental dance and a candle/fire dance with a difference!

This new show from choreographer Josephine Wise is a unique and compelling theatrical experience, ranging from the dramatic to the light-hearted.

10:30am to 12pm: Gypsy Dance / Zambra Mora with Jan Piggott
Jan Piggott is back in Aylesford after some very positive feedback from her day of workshops in April 2007, this time to ignite the fire of Gypsy dance in us! Her Zambra Mora is wonderfully free spirited and passionate with swishing skirts and stamping feet.

10:30am to 12pm: Fan Dance with Gwen Booth
Gwen has performed for Sevenveils in the Christmas Hafla last November and now returns to teach a workshop in the elegant art of fan dancing.

1pm to 2:30pm: Introduction to Burlesque with Harriet Gervasio
Harriet has also performed for Sevenveils at the Spring Hafla in 2007 where she danced her funky techno number to Turkish Delight! In recent years she has made a name for herself with her own unique blend of bellydance and burlesque. This workshop will be a fun introduction to the art of burlesque, demonstrating walks and poses. No nudity will be required, but feel free to dress up and bring high heels and any props you'd like to play with. Gloves and feather boas are highly recommended!

1pm to 2:30pm: Dancing To Drum Solo with Bree Malone (Zivah)
Bree has become quite a regular at Sevenveils events and is often mistaken for my twin! In this workshop she'll be sharing her tips for twitchy technique with sharp hits, pops and locks and shivering shimmies all to an energetic drum solo soundtrack.

3pm to 4:30pm: Introduction to Bollywood with Yvette Cowles
Yvette's Bollywood workshop was one of the highlights of the International Bellydance Congress in 2007 and I've had many requests to bring it to Aylesford. Bollywood dance is a pretty and feminine style from Indian movies.

Many of you came to the first International Bellydance Congress in 2007 at Butlins, which was the biggest bellydance event ever experienced in the UK. The Second Congress promises to be even better, with a change of venue to the much more luxurious Lakeside Leisure Complex in Surrey.
There are three hotels to choose from, which are already getting booked up, so it's best to make your reservations as soon as possible!
Teachers and performers are still being confirmed for the second Bellydance Congress, but currently include huge names such as Raqia Hassan from Cairo (who is world famous as a teacher to the stars), Randa Kamel (Egypt's hottest dancer on the current Cairo scene), Josephine Wise (the UK's most prominent and internationally respected teacher), the charismatic Jim Boz and fabulous Princess Farhana from the USA and our very own Ozgen representing the Turkish side of the dance.
